What is Pop Brixton?

Pop Brixton is a vibrant community hub located in the heart of South London. This innovative project was initiated with an aim to redefine the concept of public spaces and promote local businesses. It provides affordable workspaces for independent entrepreneurs, artists, and start-ups.

The site itself comprises of 50 shipping containers that have been creatively converted into pop-up shops, restaurants, bars and event venues. Each container has its unique design and style offering visitors a diverse range of products and experiences.

At Pop Brixton you'll find everything from artisan coffee shops to vintage clothing stores along with numerous street food vendors serving up delicious international cuisine. There are also regular events happening on-site including workshops, live music performances, markets and much more!

What makes Pop Brixton truly special is its dedication towards promoting social enterprise initiatives - all profits generated through rent payments go back into supporting local charities as well as funding further development projects within the community.

The idea for Pop Brixton was born when Lambeth Council asked the community to propose ideas for the use of a disused plot of land near the centre of Brixton.

Local architect Carl Turner worked on a proposal that imagined a new community space, built with recycled shipping containers and reclaimed materials, that could support small business from the local area. Lambeth Council saw the potential in the project, and it was given the go ahead in November 2014.

Carl Turner sold his family home to seed fund the project, then partnered with property company The Collective, who invested the remaining money needed to create the site. After 6 months of construction, the project opened its doors on the 29th of May 2015.

Pop Brixton has always been planned as a temporary project. The initial lease was offered until October 2017. This has now been extended.

My review

I visited pop Brixton in 2023 as a last minute evening meal location over the coronation bank holiday. With free entry and live djs playing tunes that kept us dancing. Pop Brixton is a casual. Multi-cultural destination. With a number of bars and food vendors.

The most appealing food supplier on the day was baba g's. Whose flavourful burgers and fries did not dissapoint.

Home of the Bhangra Burger. The spice alchemists of the London street food scene, Baba G’s have delighted the city’s lunchtimes and casual dining for over a decade.

With stacked lamb patties, colourful sides and undeniably distinctive Baba G flavours.
Now with 4 London venues including pop Brixton.

We enjoyed the generously sized Naga Delhi double burger. A double spiced lamb patty. With a crispy onion bhaji and spicy chilli burger sauce. I look forward to sinking my teeth into this burger again some day.

The cheeky tikka chicken burger is marinated for 24 hours and topped with mint riatha and tamarind chutney.
Our fries like everything else we ordered were well seasoned and freshly prepared.
