Margarita Week Launch Event

Margarita week launch event

This year, to mark National Margarita Day, which falls on the 22nd February. Leading tequila brand, Cazcabel is launching the very first National Margarita Week. Taking place from the 18th to 23rd February 2023.

Tequila

I first attended a cazcabel tequila event late last year in what was a Mexican themed pop up tequila bar. Click here for that post.

More recently I was invited to a pre-launch margarita masterclass session. In the run up to margarita week. Courtesy of Cazcabel tequila.

The exciting event took place at the Jub Jub. A private room upstairs at Callooh Callay and was hosted by Cazcabel's global brand ambassador - Nate Sorby.

The night began with an interesting introduction to tequila. Followed by a tasting of the cazcabel premium tequila range.

Next followed a demonstration of the fundamentals of margarita making. Before the main event. Our own opportunity to make a margarita to take home and enjoy at our leisure.

With a choice of different syrups. I chose the banana syrup and my husband the ginger syrup. Giving a sweet and spicy kick to his margarita.

Guests of the Cazcabel margarita masterclass can expect an evening dedicated to this iconic cocktail. Involving an introduction to Tequila. Cazcabel tasting, as well as the chance to make your very own Margarita!

The different types of Tequila

Tequila is a Mexican spirit made from the blue agave plant. There are different types of tequila, each with their own unique flavour. The most common types of tequila are blanco, reposado and añejo.

Blanco, or “white” tequila, is the purest form of the spirit and has no contact with oxygen during production. This results in a clean, fresh tasting tequila that is perfect for mixing in cocktails.

Reposado, or “rested” tequila, is aged for at least two months in oak barrels. This ageing process gives reposado a smooth, mellow flavor with hints of vanilla and caramel.

Añejo, or “aged” tequila, is aged for at least one year in small oak barrels. The extra time in the barrel allows the spirit to absorb more of the wood’s flavors, resulting in a rich, complex tequila with notes of chocolate and spice.

Palo Cortado is a type of sherry that is made in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Palo Cortado starts out as a Fino sherry but then oxidizes more than usual while aging in barrels, giving it a darker color and richer flavor. Palo Cortados are rare and expensive but make an excellent addition to any tequila collection.

How to make a perfect Margarita

There are a few things you need to make the perfect Margarita. Firstly, you'll need some good quality tequila -  such as a silver or blanco tequila. You'll also need some fresh lime juice, agave syrup and ice.

To make your Margarita, simply combine all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and give it a good shake. Then strain into a glass filled with ice and garnish with a slice of lime.

And that's all there is to it! The perfect Margarita in just a few simple steps.

Tequila pairings

Tequila is best enjoyed with food, and there are certain dishes that bring out the flavors of tequila even more. Here are some popular food pairings:

-Tacos al pastor with reposado tequila: The smoky, rich flavors of reposado tequila are a perfect match for tacos al pastor. The fatty meat and pineapple balance out the tequila's sweetness. While the spice from the chillies complement the herbal notes in the spirit.

-Ceviche with blanco tequila: Ceviche is all about bright, fresh flavors, and blanco tequila is the perfect partner. The citrusy notes in both the dish and the drink play off of each other perfectly, and the acidity in the ceviche helps to offset the drinks' natural sweetness.

-Enchiladas with añejo tequila: Añejo tequila is ideal for enchiladas because its mellow flavor won't compete with the sauce or fillings. The oakiness of añejo also pairs well with the cheese in traditional enchiladas.

The history of Tequila

Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, 65 km (40 mi) northwest of Guadalajara, and in the highlands (Los Altos) of the western Mexican state of Jalisco.

The red volcanic soil in the region is particularly well suited to the growing of the blue agave, and more than 300 million of the plants are harvested there each year.

Agave tequila grows differently depending on the region. Blue agaves grown in the highlands region are larger in size and take between seven and fourteen years to mature; lowland agaves take between five and eight years to mature.

Agaves harvested in the lowlands tend to have more herbaceous flavour while highland agaves produce sweeter fruit notes.

Tequila is most often made at a 38% alcohol content (76 U.S. proof), but can be produced between 35-55% alcohol content (70-110 U.S. proof).

Conclusion

Margarita Week is a great opportunity for tequila enthusiasts to explore the amazing variety of tequilas available in the UK.

With so many unique and exciting flavors, it's no wonder that tequila has become a global phenomenon. Whether you're an experienced cocktail or spirits connoisseur. Or just curious about this spirit, there is something here for everyone to enjoy.
